Residents of Tarkwa and its surrounding areas are set to face a severe water crisis as the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has been forced to shut down its water treatment plant in the area. The closure comes in response to extensive pollution caused by illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as "galamsey."

The situation highlights the growing environmental and public health challenges posed by galamsey operations, which have significantly contaminated water sources. Authorities are urging residents to prepare for disruptions in water supply as they work to address the crisis.
